No Power – No Problem

Power Outage at Zeals – Further Tests IT Ambulance DR Strategy.

30th October with very little warning and with an abysmal customer service, Scottish and Southern Power Distribution turned off the power to IT Ambulance, Zeals and the surrounding community. Originally planned to be a full day without Power, IT Ambulance Directors spearheaded a campaign that at least saw more resources thrown at the project to replace a dangerous Power Pylon. However efforts to supply IT Ambulance HQ with a generator set were confounded. Firstly with the failure of the generator then later, when the generator was repaired, it was found to have insufficient power to supply the server room.

Accordingly, after an hour, IT Ambulance invoked a well-rehearsed Denial of Premises Disaster Recovery Plan. Phones were diverted and our Staff were sent home with VOIP telephone handsets. Help-desk calls were pushed out to the other offices temporarily and our Terminal Server and Exchange Servers were relocated with their 3000VA UPS to our alternate DR location. From the initiation of the plan to being fully back up and running took 1 hour.

During this time we did not miss a call, nor an email.

Power was restored mid-afternoon and the servers were returned to the primary location later that day.
